Classification of Cooling Towers

1. By Air Flow Direction

Counterflow Cooling Tower: Air flows vertically upward while hot water sprays downward, maximizing heat exchange efficiency.
Crossflow Cooling Tower: Air flows horizontally through the fill while hot water cascades downward vertically, offering lower noise and easier maintenance.
2. By Air Movement Method

Natural Draft Cooling Tower: Relies on buoyancy via a tall hyperbolic chimney due to temperature differences (commonly used in power plants).
Mechanical Draft Cooling Tower: Uses power-driven fans to force or draw air through the tower.

3. By Water-to-Air Contact Method

Open Circuit Cooling Tower: The process water comes into direct contact with the ambient air, making it cost-effective but prone to water contamination.
Closed Circuit Cooling Tower (Evaporative Cooler): The process fluid flows through enclosed coils and never makes contact with the ambient air, preserving water quality for sensitive equipment.
